Military land system parts for sealing and insulation help protect vehicles, crews, and onboard electronics from the extreme conditions found in battlefield environments. These custom-fabricated components provide environmental sealing, thermal and acoustic insulation, protection against shock and vibration, and shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Elasto Proxy makes parts for military land systems and supports original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and tiered suppliers. For over 35 years, we’ve provided defense contractors in Canada, the United States, and abroad with custom sealing and insulation solutions. In addition to custom fabrication and distribution, we offer added-value services that support military programs.
This article provides an overview of some of the parts we fabricate and the materials and processes that we use. It’s the first in a series, and subsequent articles will take a deeper dive. To request a quote or discuss your application requirements, contact us.
Seals and Gaskets for Military Land Systems
Elasto Proxy supplies these and other sealing solutions for military land systems like main battle tanks, LAVs, AFVs, MRAPs, and tactical wheeled vehicles.
Door Seals
Elasto Proxy fabricates door seals that compress evenly, resist over‑compression, and maintain their elasticity over thousands of cycles. At our Montreal-area headquarters, we use SolidWorks to simulate compression, identify strain points, and optimize seal geometry before fabrication begins. Then we cut them with precision and offer a choice of gasket bonding methods.
Hatch Seals
Hatch seals protect against dust, water, and pressure changes. Foam and sponge materials provide uniform compression. Film‑spliced corners eliminate weak points. As this case study explains, Elasto Proxy helped a Canadian defense contractor replace a hatch seal that was being over-compressed.
Window Channels
The ballistic glass in armored vehicles needs durable, weather‑resistant window channels. EPDM and silicone profiles resist ultraviolet light (UV) from the sun, ozone from the air, temperature extremes, wind, and water. Elasto Proxy helps defense contractors with compound selection and transforms profiles into finished parts.
EMI Gaskets
Military land systems carry an increasing amount of electronic content. Whether it’s from intentional jamming or unintentional crosstalk, electromagnetic interference (EMI) can degrade or disable systems. Elasto Proxy makes EMI gaskets that combine enclosure sealing with MIL-DTL-83528 military-grade shielding.
Edge Trim
Crew compartments contain fabricated metal parts that can have sharp edges. This poses a risk of injury and can complicate ergonomics. Elasto Proxy supplies rubber edge trim that presses into place over exposed metal edges. These U-shaped channels can include a wire core or segmented steel core for a tight, durable hold.
Specialty Seals
Elasto Proxy also offers specialty seals for applications such as amphibious vehicles and main battle tanks. We can also supply military vehicle manufacturers with molded rubber and plastic parts such as boots, bellows, grommets, cable clamps, and button covers. With our value-added services, we can order all the materials you need for a program and store them in our warehouses.
Insulation for Military Land Systems
Elasto Proxy also supplies these and other insulation solutions for military land systems.
Thermal Insulation
Thermal insulation protects crews and electronics from the intense heat that comes from the engine compartment. Elasto Proxy fabricates multi‑layer insulation panels that combine elastomeric materials, foils, and fabrics into durable assemblies. We can source flame resistance materials if you need them, including rubber that meets standards for flame, smoke, and toxicity (FST).
Acoustic Insulation
Acoustic insulation blocks, absorbs, or dampens unwanted sounds (i.e., noise). Elasto Proxy can recommend elastomeric foams, facings, and other acoustical materials, and then build multi-layer composites that are tailored to your application. We laminate these materials together and then precision-cut them. We can also apply pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) for quick installation.
Vibration Mounts
Vibration mounts (anti-vibration mounts, isolation mounts) are rubber-to-metal bonded assemblies that protect displays, sensors, and electronics from shock and vibration. Rubber is used for vibration control because it has a higher shear modulus than other materials. Elasto Proxy can supply you with vibration mounts in the quantities you need.
Materials Used in Military Sealing & Insulation
Elasto Proxy provides military land system parts made from these and other materials.
- Silicone combines high-temperature resistance with excellent flexibility
- Fluorosilicone combines the properties of silicone with fuel and chemical resistance.
- EPDM exhibits outstanding resistance to water, weather, sunlight, and ozone.
- Nitrile provides strong resistance to fuels and oils.
- Electrically conductive silicones combine sealing with EMI shielding.
- Closed-cell foams and sponges are used for environmental sealing
- Open-cell foams and sponges are used for acoustic absorption
Custom Fabrication Services
Elasto Proxy’s custom fabrication capabilities include water jet cutting, splicing and bonding, and lamination and taping services.
Water Jet Cutting
Water jet cutting makes precise cuts with smooth edges and no tooling costs. It’s ideal for defense programs that need low-to-medium volumes of parts, including prototypes. There’s no custom tooling to wait for or pay for, and water jet cutting can create part features like chamfers, dovetail cuts, 90° corners, and small notches and vent holes.
Splicing and Bonding
Elasto Proxy offers a choice of splicing and bonding method for military gaskets with strong, reliable joints and corners.
- Hot splicing supports high-volume production and works well with sponge rubber.
- Cold bonding is ideal for low-volume runs because it requires no metal tooling.
- Molding creates radiused corners and produces joints that resistant stretching.
- Vulcanizing is more forgiving than hot splicing and can be used for low volumes of O-rings.
Laminating and Taping
Lamination layers and adhesively bonds different materials together to create sandwich-like structures. It’s used to produce thermal, acoustic, and thermal-acoustic insulation for military vehicles. Elasto Proxy can also apply PSA tapes or use a heat-activated taping system (HATS) to supply you with military land system parts that are easy to install.
