UL 94 V1 and UL 94 V2 rubber products meet Underwriters Laboratories (UL) requirements for resistance to vertical burning. Neither of these two flammability ratings are as stringent at UL 94 V0, which applies to materials where vertical burning stops within 10 seconds with no flaming drips. Yet some part drawings specify UL 94 V1 or UL 94 V2 rubber products for sealing and insulation.
Keep reading to learn more and ask Elasto Proxy for UL flame rated rubber as coils, sheets, or cut lengths, or as ready-to-install products like rubber gaskets, edge trim, or grommets.
What is UL 94 V1 Flame Rated Rubber?
UL 94 V1 rubber is fire tested in a vertical position and stops burning within 30 seconds, a duration that’s three times longer than the 10-second standard in UL 94 V0. Like the more stringent UL 94 V0 flame rating, however, UL 94 V1 does not allow for drips of flaming particles. This makes UL 94 V1 rubber suitable for applications where flame resistance is essential but less critical.
UL 94 V1 rubber is used in some of the same products where UL 94 V0 and UL 94 V2 rubber is also used. Yet the specific applications for UL 94 V1 are different. The following list provides some examples of their use.
- Automotive: Interior components such as seals, grommets and dampers and under-the-hood applications where there is moderate exposure to high heat and potential flame.
- Electronics: Seals and gaskets for network routers, speakers, and gaming consoles.
- Appliances: Seals, gaskets, and cushioning pads in larger household appliances like microwave ovens, dryers, and washing machines.
- Industrial Equipment: Seals and gaskets for control panels, housings, and protective covers that need to meet fire safety standards.
- Building and Construction: Fire-resistant seals and gaskets for HVAC systems, doors, and windows.
In addition, UL 94 V1 rubber products are used in two applications where UL 94 V2 is less common.
- Electrical: Seals, gaskets, and insulation in circuit breakers, switchgear, and transformers.
- Medical: Non-critical components in medical devices and equipment.
What is UL 94 V2 Flame Rated Rubber?
UL 94 V2 rubber is fire tested in a vertical position and stops burning within 60 seconds. That’s twice as long as UL 94 V1 and six times longer than UL 94 V0. Yet that’s not the only way in which UL 94 V2 is different. Rubber products that meet the UL 94 V2 flammability rating may drip flaming particles, which can ignite other materials.
Despite its more limited flame resistance, UL 94 V2 rubber is used in some of the same products as UL 94 V0 and UL 94 V1 rubber. The specific applications are different, however. The following list provides some examples.
- Automotive: Interior components such as floor mats, weather seals, and door gaskets.
- Electronics: Seals, gaskets, and casings for devices such as remote controls, keyboards, and some electrical adapters.
- Appliances: Rubber parts for smaller household appliances like toasters, blenders, and coffee machines.
- Industrial Equipment: Fire-rated gaskets, covers, or vibration dampeners.
- Building and Construction: Non-critical seals, gaskets, and padding for HVAC systems, doors, and windows.
Choose Flame Rated Rubber from Elasto Proxy
Do you need UL 94 V1 or UL 94 V2 rated rubber products? These specialty elastomers cost more than commodity-grade rubber, so your first step is to make sure they’re what you really need. Then ask Elasto Proxy for ready-to-install materials or ready-to-install products. We also supply UL 94 V0 rubber and an EPDM meets UL 94 HB, the flammability rating we’ll cover in our next article.
