EMI Gasket Materials and Fabrication Methods
The EMI gasket materials that we fabricate are silicone or fluorosilcone compounds that contain metal or metal-coated particles. Normally, silicones and flurosilicones are electrically insulating; however, the addition of these particles provides electrical conductivity.
Elasto Proxy sources EMI elastomers as sheets, rolls, or extrusions and then uses our water jet equipment to cut them into specific shapes and sizes. Water jet cutting is fast and precise, and it’s ideal for low-to-medium volumes (including prototypes) because there’s no tooling to pay for.
If you require molded EMI gaskets instead, Elasto Proxy can also provide what you need. For example, the avionics in helicopters or the electronics in military radios use molded EMI O-rings. For very low volumes, such as during prototyping, we can supply you with bonded EMI O-rings that require less expensive tooling.
Types of Military EMI Gaskets
Elasto Proxy fabricates four main types of EMI gaskets for military applications.
- MIL-DTL-83528
- Flame retardant
- Corrosion resistant
- Fuel and solvent resistant
Each type of product uses a specific type of shielding elastomer.

MIL-DTL-83528 EMI Gaskets
MIL-DTL-83528 EMI gaskets are made of electrically conductive elastomers that meet the lettered requirements of MIL-DTL-83528, a U.S. military detail specification. Sometimes, this specification is written as MIL-G-83528 or M83528 instead.
Key sections of MIL-DTL-83528 include:
- Type A – Silver-copper silicone (65 durometer)
- Type B – Silver-aluminum silicone (65 durometer)
- Type C – Silver-copper flurosilicone (75 durometer)
- Type D – Silver-aluminum flurosilicone (70 durometer)
The MIL-DTL-83528 gaskets that Elasto Proxy fabricates are made of materials that belong to the M83528 Qualified Product List (QPL). This approved product list is maintained by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), part of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
As the table below shows, many of the M83528 EMI gasket materials that Elasto Proxy fabricates are alternatives or offsets to CHO-SEAL® products from Parker Chomerics. In addition to custom EMI gaskets, we can supply M83528 slash sizes like M83528/002 EMI O-rings.

Flame Retardant EMI Gaskets
Flame retardant EMI gaskets are made of shielding silicones with UL flame ratings. They contain cost-effective nickel-graphite particles and meet ASTM E595 requirements for outgassing, a problem that can cloud optics, sensors, and electronics in vacuum environments.
As the table below indicates, the flame-retardant EMI gaskets that Elasto Proxy fabricates are made of materials you can use in place of GORE GS2100 and GORE GS5200. These materials were used in various military applications, but W.L. Gore discontinued them in 2020.
Flame Rated EMI Shielding Materials
Flame Rating | Elasto Proxy Material | Short Description | Compare to
UL 94 V0 | EMI502-40-V0 | 40-durometer | GORE GS2100
UL 94 V0 | EMI502-60-V0 | 60-durometer | GORE GS5200 |
Corrosion Resistant EMI Gaskets
Corrosion-resistant EMI gaskets combine environmental sealing and EMI shielding with protection against salt spray. They resist galvanic corrosion, a problem that can shorten flange life and cause flange failure in marine environments such as the enclosures on naval vessels.
Elasto Proxy fabricates corrosion-resistant EMI gaskets from two materials that have been independently tested to MIL-DTL-83528 requirements. Both use silicone as the base elastomer and are filled with nickel-aluminum particles. Compare them to CHO-SEAL products.
Corrosion Resistant EMI Gasket Materials
- EMI2529 is a 68-durometer, nickel-aluminum silicone offset to CHO-SEAL 6502.
- EMI2551 is a 72-durometer, nickel-aluminum silicone offset to CHO-SEAL 6503
Fuel and Solvent Resistant EMI Gaskets
Fuel and solvent resistant EMI gaskets use fluorosilicone as the base material and contain silver-aluminum or nickel-graphite particles. Fluorosilicones resist jet fuel, de-icing fluids, and other harsh chemicals. They also provide excellent low-temperature resistance.
Two of the fuel and solvent resistant materials that we fabricate meet MIL-DTL-83528, Type D requirements. They also represent offsets to CHO-SEAL products.
