UL Gasket Materials for Flame Resistance and Ingress Protection

UL Gasket MaterialsUL gasket materials can provide flame resistance, ingress protection, or other specialized properties. For engineers, it’s important to understand what the different standards from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) mean. It’s also worth knowing if UL gasket materials are truly required in your component-level designs. Otherwise, you may “over-engineer” your gaskets and pay too much for materials.

Compared to commodity elastomers, the prices for UL compounds are higher. The minimum order quantities (MOQs) are greater, too. In the case of rubber extrusions, the compounder has to use special tooling to account for different flow rates. The number of suppliers who offer UL materials is also limited. Unless you really need them, UL gasket materials can add unnecessary expenses to your application.

Of course, some sealing and insulation projects require UL gasket materials to meet specific requirements. In this blog entry, the first in our September series about compound selection, Elasto Proxy explains what engineers need to know about UL gaskets for flame resistance and ingress protection. These aren’t the only UL standards for gaskets, but they’re the most common – and they can be confusing. (more…)

How to Install Rubber Gaskets

Install Rubber GasketsDo you know how to install rubber gaskets for optimal sealing and insulation? If rubber seals are installed improperly, small leaks can admit air, water, dust, light, and sound. That’s a big problem for assembly and maintenance personnel who work in industries like mobile equipment, defense, aerospace, stainless steel and food equipment, infrastructure, and medical and health.

Engineers and sourcing managers can help by specifying the right profile materials, but gasket installation is about more than compound selection. Gaskets can attach with mechanical fasteners, but bolts and screws require tools. Plus, mechanical fasteners can loosen from vibrations. Adhesives are great for gasket installation, but spray-on systems are messy and can raise environmental health and safety concerns.

In this article from Elasto Proxy, the first in a series of “how to” blog entries, we explain how to install rubber gaskets for sealing and installation. In addition to adhesive selection, you’ll learn about key profile measurements. Importantly, Elasto Proxy shares requirements and best practices, too. If you want to learn how to install rubber gaskets, this article is for you. (more…)

Data Center Cooling Systems: HVAC Seals, Gaskets, and Insulation

Data Center Cooling SystemsData center cooling systems need to maintain temperatures that support the continuous and reliable performance of information technology equipment (ITE) such as blade servers, networking switches, and routers. If heat isn’t removed from the vicinity of sensitive ITE components, overheating can occur. If servers get too hot, onboard logic will turn-off computers to avoid damage. This protects data center assets, but results in downtime and loss of efficiency.

Data center servers can run at temperatures that aren’t high enough to trigger a shut-off, but doing so can reduce equipment life. Humidity levels and airborne contamination can impede performance, too. For data center owners, developers, and operators, the high cost of cooling is especially problematic. As Pacific Gas & Electric explains in its Data Center Best Practices Guide, data centers can consume 100 to 200 times as much electricity as standard office spaces. (more…)

HVAC Maintenance and Replacement Parts: Custom Seals, Gaskets, and Insulation

HVAC MaintenanceHVAC maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) organizations need replacement parts for air handling units, air conditioners, boilers, chillers, heat pumps, furnaces, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and other types of HVAC equipment. HVAC MROs also need to source these replacement parts in low-to-medium volume quantities that meet requirements for cost and quality.

HVAC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can supply rubber seals, gaskets, and insulation, but at higher prices and in greater minimum order quantities (MOQs) than some HVAC MROs want to pay. HVAC aftermarket parts are available, but commodity items aren’t the right choice when a custom sealing and insulation solution is required.

Elasto Proxy supplies custom HVAC seals, gaskets, and insulation in low-to-medium volumes. HVAC MROs like our pricing, but they also appreciate our value-added manufacturing. In addition to custom fabrication, we offer design assistance and help with material selection. If you don’t have a drawing of the HVAC component that you need to replace, just send us a sample and we’ll create a CAD file. Elasto Proxy can recommend the right rubber and the most cost-effective MOQ, too. (more…)
