Why is gasket design important?

Good gasket designs account for installation. Let’s say you’re designing a door seal for a piece of heavy equipment. If you design the gasket to attach with fasteners, you’ll need to specify a hole pattern on your part drawing. During assembly, an installer needs to drill holes in the door frame, align the gasket holes with the frame holes, and then install the fasteners. The improper use of hand tools can damage gaskets, and inexperienced installers will probably work less quicky. There may be problems with consistency, too.

Instead of using metal fasteners or plastic pins, your installers could attach the gasket with a spray-on adhesive. Your part drawing might not need to include a hole pattern, but your installers will need to prepare the surface of the metal frame. If gasket installation occurs inside a vehicle cabin, the installer may need to protect surfaces such as seating from errant spray. Spray-on adhesives don’t require pins, bolts, or screws, but they introduce setup and cleanup costs along with environmental health and safety (EHS) concerns.

What are the advantages of gasket taping?

Elasto Proxy can supply you with taped gaskets that support fast, efficient peel-and-stick installation. Instead of holding gaskets in place and struggling with fasteners and hand tools, workers can simply peel away a release liner and stick the gasket to the door frame. With some gasket tapes, an installer can even reposition the gasket before full adhesion occurs. There are no messy adhesives to prep for or cleanup, and gasket tapes don’t introduce EHS concerns. The benefits don’t end there either.

Gasket taping can support either temporary or permanent fastening. That means you can still use metal fasteners or plastic pins, if you’d like, but your installers won’t have to hold the gasket in place, which speeds installation. Depending on the type of gasket tape and your application requirements, you may be able to avoid using fasteners altogether. There are two types of tapes that Elasto Proxy can apply: pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) and heat activated taping system (HATS).

  • PSAs stick to surfaces with light pressure. They hold the rubber gasket in place until workers can install mechanical fasteners for more permanent attachment.
  • HATS has excellent adhesion and holding strength but require up to 24 hours of curing after gasket installation. Once these tapes are fully-cured, however, the bonds are permanent.

Do you need help with gasket installation?

Elasto Proxy can help you to choose the right type of gasket tape for your sealing application and can even provide your workers with gasket installation advice. For example, we can record a video of the proper installation procedure and then send it to you. As a value-added manufacturer, we do much more than ship coils of rubber. We can provide you with finished gaskets that are easy-to-install and travel right from your receiving dock to your assembly line.
